Why Loss of Power Steering Is a Serious Issue
Power steering makes maneuvering your Hyundai Tucson easier and safer—especially at low speeds or during emergency maneuvers. A worn or broken power steering belt can cause complete loss of assist, increasing steering effort and reducing control.
What Does the Power Steering Belt Do?
The power steering belt connects the crankshaft to the power steering pump, allowing the pump to generate hydraulic pressure. This pressure helps you turn the wheels with minimal effort. Without a properly functioning belt, the pump cannot operate, leading to an unresponsive steering wheel.
What Are Early Signs the Power Steering Belt Needs Replacement?
1. Squealing Noise When Starting or Turning
This is often caused by a slipping or loose power steering belt under load.
2. Increased Steering Effort
If steering feels heavy, especially at low speeds, the belt may be failing to drive the pump.
3. Visible Cracks or Fraying on the Belt
Inspect your belt for physical wear, which indicates it’s due for replacement.
4. Fluid Leaks Around the Power Steering Pump
Leaks may signal that a failing belt is causing uneven pump operation or added stress.
5. Intermittent Loss of Steering Assist
A slipping belt can cause power assist to cut in and out while driving.
Make sure to also check connected pulleys and brackets to ensure proper alignment and belt tension. These parts work together to keep your power steering system reliable. Contact us today to discover exclusive online prices on all OEM Hyundai parts.
